An 8-year-old boy cut up his mother's gold necklace and handed out the pieces to his classmates as gifts
The unusual act, which took place in Shandong province, China, was only discovered a month later, the South China Morning Post reported.
The boy's mother, surnamed Sun, shared the bizarre tale on social media on 28 November 2025, posting, "Maybe you think it is a funny fabricated tale, but it is true."

The necklace, a marriage souvenir, was bought by her husband and weighed about 8g. Given that gold jewellery sells for about 1,200 yuan (RM700) per gram in China, the necklace was valued at about 9,600 yuan (RM5,600).
Sun only found out after her daughter told her that one of her brother's classmates mentioned receiving a piece of gold from him.
The boy admitted that the gold he was giving away came from his mother's necklace.
The couple checked their household video footage and saw the boy opening Sun's drawer to take out the necklace.
The footage also showed the youngster attempting to burn the necklace with a lighter while holding a pair of pliers. When that failed, he resorted to biting the gold into small pieces.

When asked if he knew how expensive gold was, the boy reportedly said no. His father subsequently beat him as punishment, as they were only able to retrieve a small portion of the necklace
A lawyer based in northern Hebei province, going by the alias Bi Jian Xia Shuo Fa online, weighed in on the disciplinary action.
The lawyer noted that beating the boy was a violation of the country's Juvenile Protection Law, as children aged 8 or above are only regarded as having limited capacity for civil conduct by law in China.
The story has made the boy an online sensation, drawing humorous reactions from many.
