Bali To Tear Down Nusa Penida Glass Lift After Public Backlash

The developer has six months to tear down the structure.

Authorities in Bali have ordered the dismantling of a 182m-tall glass elevator on Nusa Penida following weeks of public outrage and construction violations

According to Malay Mail, Bali Governor Wayan Koster has instructed the developer, PT Indonesia Kaishi Tourism Property Investment Development, to halt all work immediately.

He added that the company has six months to tear down the structure and an additional three months to restore the surrounding area to its original state.

About 70% of the project had already been completed.

The lift, introduced last year by Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, was meant to provide safer access to the beach, reducing reliance on the steep stairs where many visitors have previously been injured

However, public criticism grew after photos and videos showed the metal structure cutting into the island's iconic cliffside landscape.

Locals and environmental groups condemned the project, saying it was damaging the very scenery that draws tourists to Nusa Penida.

Koster said the demolition order aligns with broader efforts to preserve Bali's natural environment, cultural heritage, and social values, dismissing claims that the decision was anti-investment

"Bali needs investment, but it must be carried out with integrity and responsibility," he said, noting that development should safeguard the island, not exploit it.
