Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has responded to public concerns over PETRONAS's decision to lay off more than 5,000 employees, clarifying that the majority of those affected are contract workers

He made the remark briefly when asked by reporters after Friday prayers, 6 June, at Surau Al-Ikhwan in Dengkil, following news that the national oil and gas company would reduce its workforce by around 10%.

"Yes, most are contract workers," Anwar told the press without elaborating further.

His comment comes a day after PETRONAS confirmed the impending retrenchments, describing them as as part of a company-wide "rightsizing" effort in response to an "increasingly challenging operating environment".
