Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced initiatives to reduce the number of serious road accidents similar to the one that killed 15 earlier in June

He said that the Ministry of Transport (MOT) is in the final stages of setting speed limit regulations for heavy vehicles.

RM2.5 billion will also be allocated for the maintenance of federal roads, which would include paving potholes, installing street lights in high-risk areas, and replacing road furniture.

Further allocations include:

  • RM700 million for G1-G4 contractors.
  • RM5.6 billion for a MARRIS (Malaysia Road Records Information System) grant to maintain state roads nationwide.
  • RM30 million to strengthen the role of district engineers in expediting minor road repairs in districts, which would include citizen complaints made through the MYJalan system.

The Malaysia Highway Authority will also install 3,000 units of LED lights at several high-risk hotspots on highways

To help enforce speed limits, the government has also proposed that the cost of speed limiters for heavy vehicles be given an Accelerated Capital Allowance, to be claimed within one year.

The Pertubuhan Keselamatan Sosial (PERKESO) Health Screening Programme has also been expanded to include public and goods transport drivers.
