According to a circular issued on 24 March by Education Director-General Azman Adnan, students must wear a 5cm x 2.5cm badge displaying the national flag on the right side of their chest.
The new requirement applies to students in government schools, government-aided schools, matriculation colleges, and teacher training institutes, reported the New Straits Times.
Other educational institutions are also encouraged to adopt the practice.

The initiative, aimed at inculcating patriotism, strengthening unity, and reinforcing national identity, was approved by the Cabinet on 14 February
The Education Ministry expressed hope that the requirement would instil a sense of responsibility and discipline among students while serving as a symbol of respect and national pride.
"The ministry plays a crucial role in fostering patriotism and love for the country among students and educators. Therefore, a grassroots initiative must be implemented holistically to ensure that this spirit remains strong and continues to thrive," the ministry stated.
To further support this initiative, state education departments and district education offices will be tasked with encouraging schools to organise educational programmes focused on national values.
These programmes will emphasise the significance of the Jalur Gemilang badge as a national symbol and its role in fostering patriotism among students.
Each student will receive two free Jalur Gemilang badges to be worn on their school uniforms
The ministry confirmed that the distribution of these badges will commence with the 2025/2026 school session.
The ministry has also issued guidelines on the proper placement and wearing of the Jalur Gemilang badge.
