AirAsia X Bhd will be renamed AirAsia on 19 January, as the airline group moves closer to completing its long-running restructuring plan

According to founder and Capital A Bhd CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, the move is part of a plan to consolidate all of the group's aviation businesses under a single airline group and brand.

"AirAsia will be one airline group and one brand," Fernandes said in a LinkedIn post, adding that the consolidation reflects the company's global ambitions.

Right now, AirAsia X mainly handles long-haul flights, while short-haul flights sit under a different entity

Once the restructuring is complete, everything will be consolidated under AirAsia, making operations simpler and more streamlined.

On the same day the renaming takes effect, Capital A, the group's holding company, will apply to be removed from PN17 status, a financially distressed classification it has held since the pandemic.

Following this, Capital A will focus only on non-aviation businesses, such as logistics, aircraft maintenance, food and beverage, and branding.

Fernandes also shared that AirAsia is finalising new aircraft orders, which are expected to help cut costs and improve profitability

The airline group also has global expansion plans, with aims to strengthen its presence beyond Asia, including the Middle East.
