A 65-year-old woman in Thailand shocked staff at Wat Rat Prakhong Tham, a Buddhist temple in Bangkok, when she started moving inside her coffin
The temple's general and financial affairs manager, Pairat Soodthoop, told The Associated Press on Monday, 24 November, that the woman's brother had driven her approximately 500km from Phitsanulok province to be cremated at the temple.
The brother explained that his sister, who had been bedridden for two years, appeared to have stopped breathing two days prior. He then placed her in a coffin to be brought to a hospital.
He tried to take her to a Bangkok hospital for organ donation, a wish she had expressed, but was refused due to the lack of an official death certificate, which led him to the temple
However, as the temple manager was also explaining to the brother that he needed an official death certificate to cremate his sister, they heard a faint knock coming from the coffin.
"I was a bit surprised, so I asked them to open the coffin, and everyone was startled," said the temple manager, adding that he saw the woman "opening her eyes slightly and knocking on the side of the coffin".
After assessing her condition, the temple staff immediately sent the woman to a nearby hospital, and the abbot has committed to covering all her medical expenses.
