2 SMJK Teachers Charged For Caning 15-Year-Old Student In Discipline Room

One of the accused has since retired.

Two teachers have been charged with voluntarily causing hurt to a 15-year-old student using a rotan in 2023

According to Utusan Malaysia, Choong Kean Beng, 59, now a retired teacher, pleaded not guilty to the charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code at the George Town Magistrates' Court yesterday, 6 October.

In a separate courtroom, Lau Teik Hwa, 47, also pleaded not guilty to the same charge.

The duo is accused of caning the same student in the discipline room of SMJK Chung Hwa Confucian around 5.30pm on 6 Dec 2023 and 4pm on 2 Aug 2023, respectively, reported the New Straits Times.

If convicted, they could face up to 10 years in jail, a fine or whipping, or both.

The magistrates set bail at RM6,000 for Chong and RM3,000 for Lau

Earlier, when the prosecution requested a bail of RM7,000 for Choong, his counsel, K Mahendren, requested a lower amount, explaining that his client receives a monthly pension of RM4,000 and has a wife who is battling stage 2 cancer.

As for Lau, his counsel, Koay Ee Teng, also sought a reduced bail, noting that Lau has three children aged 11, 15, and 18, respectively.

Choong's case has been set for mention on 4 November, while Lau's will be heard on 11 November.
