A total of 125,000 civil servants currently in Grade 1 will be promoted to Grade 5 beginning January 2027, as part of improvements under Malaysia's Public Service Remuneration System

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the move will be implemented in stages under the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA).

According to Anwar, the promotions are contingent on officers completing a two-week training course, with the Public Service Department (PSD) currently refining the proposal and its prerequisites.

The upgrade will involve administrative, clerical, and financial assistant positions across the public service

Anwar said the decision was discussed during a meeting with Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Public Service director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abd Aziz on the implementation of the SSPA.

"I have asked the Public Service Department to establish a clear promotion pathway from Grade 1 to Grade 5 for 125,000 administrative, clerical, and finance assistants," he said.

Anwar announced this during his speech at the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry's monthly assembly today, 9 March.
