A Malaysian couple recently went viral on TikTok for hosting an outdoor wedding with a unique, eco-friendly twist

The bride, Shahera Zahari, shared photos from her big day on the app, highlighting some of the non-traditional choices she and her husband made.
Set against the misty hills of Janda Baik, their eco-friendly wedding wasn't about cutting corners. Instead, it was about weaving heritage, love for the land, and thoughtful details into every moment.
Every detail of the wedding was thoughtfully and tastefully planned, even down to providing insect repellent, ensuring guests could enjoy the celebration in comfort.
But what caught netizens' attention was when they swapped conventional doorgifts for something more practical and sustainable — fresh vegetables and fruits packed in recyclable paper bags for their guests to take home.

In a conversation with SAYS, Shahera shared that she and her husband wanted their big day to feel like an extension of who they are

"Janda Baik has always felt like home. Using fresh produce, repurposed lace, and nature as part of the celebration allowed us to honour heritage while keeping things meaningful, sustainable, and close to the earth," she said.
Instead of splurging on elaborate centrepieces or disposable décor, almost everything was handmade or locally sourced, from food and flowers to fabrics and favours. The result was a celebration that felt authentic, grounded, and unforgettable.
Even the farmer's market-inspired doorgifts became more than just a giveaway.
"It sparked conversations, made guests feel comfortable with one another, and avoided waste.
"It was also our way of sharing rezeki (sustenance), making it feel like part of the celebration rather than just a token gift," Shahera explained.

One of the wedding's most talked-about details was Shahera's unconventional bouquet, developed with floral artist Ifzan Ibrahim

"I asked the artist, 'What would it look like if a Javanese princess, at the height of her era, were to be married?'
"From that vision, we created a cascading bouquet made of petai (bitter bean) and jantung pisang (banana flowers)," she said.
The result was a bouquet both symbolic and striking, rooted in Nusantara tradition yet boldly modern.
For Shahera, the eco-friendly wedding wasn't about sacrifice but about reimagining what beauty could mean.

Netizens were in awe of the thoughtful concept, praising the couple for breaking traditions in such a refreshing way
"Honestly, this idea is so refreshing. Instead of using the Western fairytale and garden theme, we should opt for our classic 'Malay Magika' concept. I loved seeing this," wrote one user.

"Wow, you're the first to use petai as your wedding bouquet in Malaysia," commented another.

"I felt speechless after every swipe. How I wish to attend such a wedding," said another.
