From afar, this just looks like an abandoned mansion. But within, Villa Nabila hides a chilling past — one steeped in mystery and tragedy.

If you've ever heard whispers of teenagers going missing, mysterious screams echoing from an old hilltop house, or rumours of a girl named Nabila buried in a walled-up room, you've heard the legend of Villa Nabila.  Sitting above Danga Bay in Johor Bahru, this eerie-looking bungalow has been the centre of Malaysia's urban legends for decades.

Before it was called Villa Nabila, this unsettling mansion was known as Christine Palace

Back in the day, this mansion perched along Jalan Skudai wasn't just any bungalow. It was part of a trio of luxurious homes owned by tycoon Dato' Yap Sing Hock. He named them after his eldest daughter, Christine, and together they were known as the Christine Palace.

After Dato' Yap's business empire crumbled, he racked up debts in the millions and lost everything, including the mansion. It was repossessed, abandoned, and left to slowly rot under a blanket of trees and silence.

Nobody really knows how the name 'Villa Nabila' came about, but the ghost stories stuck

Some say Villa Nabila was named after a girl who lived and tragically died in the mansion. The most famous version of the tale involves a young girl named Nabila, murdered by a jealous maid who wanted her family's inheritance.

Other versions claim the entire family was killed, their bodies hidden within the walls. Some say Nabila was buried in the backyard. There are no official records or police reports to back any of this up.

Some even believe the mansion was once home to a wealthy Caucasian family. According to this version, the owner had promised to divide the land among his six siblings. But when he failed to deliver on his word, one of the siblings allegedly sent a killer to the house — slaughtering the entire family in cold blood.

Things got wild in 2013 when a teen reportedly went missing after entering the house

According to Malay Mail, a missing persons report was actually filed for a 16-year-old boy. Police later confirmed that the teen had been found safe. The authorities also urged the public not to spread unverified claims, but by then, the story had already taken on a life of its own.

The viral hype even led to a horror movie, Villa Nabila, which hit cinemas in 2015

Directed by Syafiq Yusof, the movie adopted a found-footage format and was loosely based on the real-life rumours that turned the abandoned mansion into an Internet legend.

In a twist no one saw coming, the mansion became a safe haven for stray dogs in 2017

According to reports by The Star, a local animal lover started using the abandoned property to shelter stray dogs. With no one claiming the property and no official redevelopment plans, it quietly transformed into an unexpected sanctuary.

Even today, curious visitors sometimes stop by to snap photos through the rusted gates.

So, do you dare to check it out? Just remember one thing…

According to urban legend, anyone entering the house must go in with an even number of people. If not, you might just end up leaving with one extra friend tagging along. 🙂

Some say the spirits there are restless. Others say they just want company.  Either way, if you're planning a trip — maybe hold that thought. Recent TikToks show the site has been sealed off, with no way in.

Looks like the ghosts finally got some peace… or maybe they're just waiting.
