Walk into Weird Space in SS4, Petaling Jaya, and you'll instantly feel like you've time-travelled into a parallel universe where your grandma's rattan furniture, your dad's oversized '80s work shirts, and a random disco lamp all live happily under one roof

And honestly? It's a vibe.

Derrick, the founder of Weird Space, used to live the classic 9-to-5 life

But in July last year, he decided to hit pause. Instead of climbing yet another rung on the corporate ladder, he opened a shop dedicated to something he's genuinely passionate about: thrifting.

Now, instead of answering emails at ungodly hours, he's busy curating racks of preloved clothes, quirky vintage furniture, and items you swear you've seen before (maybe at your nenek's house, maybe in a Wong Kar-Wai film).

Speaking to SAYS, Derrick shared that he doesn't just bulk-buy from bundles like most thrift stores do

He actively sources from small shops like Kedai Bless, supporting local businesses in the process. If those shops can't sell their items fast enough, they usually bundle them up. That's when Derrick swoops in, handpicks the gems, and saves them from disappearing into storage doom.

He also works with people decluttering, migrating overseas, or even families clearing out a loved one's belongings.

Every piece comes with a story, which is kinda poetic when you think about it. Secondhand doesn't mean second life; it means next life.

At his store, we spotted old Enid Blyton books, old-school radios, Walkmans and Discmans, vinyl records, a pair of Levi's your cool uncle might've worn on his first date, and random eclectic knick-knacks that are too weird to explain but somehow make perfect sense in your living room.

And if you've got items you no longer need, Derrick also accepts donations.

Yep, your decluttering mission could easily become someone else's new favourite thing.
