While many kids her age are still writing short stories for fun, 11-year-old Avril Herng from Selangor has already turned her ideas into a 260-page book

Her debut, Laura Taylors: The Case of the Phantom's Emerald, introduces readers to a young detective and marks the beginning of a new series she hopes to inspire others.

Avril is homeschooled, which gives her plenty of time to focus on the things she loves. She started making little hand-made "books" filled with short stories and drawings.

Encouraged by her mother, her love for storytelling started when she was only 4

She first wrote short tales on loose pages and clipped them together to look like tiny books. Later, she filled entire notebooks with stories and drawings, always running to her eldest sister for feedback — the same sister who eventually became her editor.

That early encouragement became the foundation for her lifelong love for writing.

Avril credits her family for giving her the strength to keep writing. Her family helps with her writing process while her friends pitch in by reading drafts, sharing feedback, and spreading the word.

Along the way, she explores hidden passageways, uncovers secret motives, faces unexpected dangers, and even forges new friendships.

Avril's story brings together suspense, friendship, and plenty of twists to keep readers hooked until the end.

Avril grew up reading Enid Blyton, JK Rowling, and David Walliams, who showed her how stories can surprise and entertain. A visit to London sparked her imagination even more — the Victorian-style buildings and cobbled streets felt mysterious and secretive, making the perfect inspiration for her debut.

Her writing process began as notes and sketches before she developed into full chapters. Avril stayed up late at night polishing her manuscript, with her mother offering feedback, and her sister editing the draft.

"I truly poured my heart, my sweat and tears, into every page. Because getting a traditional publisher is difficult, we chose to self-publish, and that meant learning about layout, cover design, illustrations, and printing," Avril told SAYS.

The second book in the Laura Taylors series is already underway

The sequel is almost ready, with new illustrations and a fresh cover in the works. At the same time, she's already writing Book 3, which promises even more twists and surprises.

For Avril, the greatest reward comes from readers who adored her characters or ask where to get the book.

"I hope my book can inspire many people to be brave, bold, and to chase their dreams, and that Laura's journey can give motivation, courage, and strength to anyone who reads it," said Avril
