Next year, both Thaipusam and Federal Territory Day fall on the same date — Sunday, 1 February 2026

Under Malaysia's labour law — Employment Act 1955 Section (D)(1) — if a public holiday falls on a rest day (like Sunday) or coincides with another public holiday, the next working day must be observed as a replacement holiday.

Here's what the Act states:

But here's the big question everyone's asking:

Since Thaipusam and Federal Territory Day fall on the same Sunday next year… do workers in KL and Putrajaya get more than one replacement day?

The answer is: it depends on whether the government officially declares an additional replacement holiday, or if your employer decides to grant one.

IF the government does declare an additional replacement holiday, the schedule could look like this:

  • Sunday, 1 February 2026: Rest day (actual date of both holidays)
  • Monday, 2 February 2026: Replacement public holiday for Federal Territory Day
  • Tuesday, 3 February 2026: Replacement public holiday for Thaipusam
  • Wednesday, 4 February 2026: Back to work

That could mean a four-day long weekend for those working the standard Monday-to-Friday week in KL and Putrajaya.

However, nothing is confirmed yet, as the government has not made any official announcements at the time of writing

If you want to know whether an extra holiday will be granted, it's best to check with your company's HR department.
