Sunway Student Volunteers (SSV) isn't your average campus club

Founded in 2010 with just 22 members, it has grown into one of the largest student leadership bodies at Sunway University, boasting nearly 2,000 members today.

SSV gives students the chance to make a real impact, develop leadership skills, and cultivate empathy, all while reaching out to communities in need.

The organisation is powered by five key departments: Community, Environment, Health, Wildlife, and Design & Publicity, with each running at least two volunteer events per month alongside core SSV initiatives like the Welcoming Party and the Shoebox Project.

In 2025 alone, SSV organised 324 events across all departments, ranging from environmental clean-ups to wildlife awareness programmes.

Here are some of SSV's highlights for 2025:

SSV Libraries

A new initiative in 2025, SSV Libraries focuses on after-school learning for underserved children, in partnership with Sunway Desa Mentari Community Development Programme, as well as Professor Mahendhiran Sanggaran Nair, Pro Vice Chancellor of Sunway University in Research and Sustainability.

The children were tutored in English and Mathematics across 15 sessions, giving them confidence, equal educational opportunities, and a chance to shine.

Health Week 2025: Empower Your Health, Elevate Your Life

Over three days, more than 630 students and staff took part in screenings, fitness challenges, mental health assessments, LASIK & glaucoma checks, and blood donation drives.

This event was held in collaboration with partners like Breast Cancer Welfare Association, Pusat Darah Negara, Sunway Eye Centre, National Cancer Society of Malaysia, Ministry of Health Divisions, and more.

Beyond Limits: Fundraising & Inclusive Sports Day

An inclusive Sports Day with Special Olympics Malaysia brought together 25 intellectually disabled participants, 25 Sunway students, and 40 SSV volunteers to participate in activities like aerobics warm-up, Run & Drop Challenge, Cup Shuffle Challenge, and Paper Ball Relay Challenge.

The event aimed to raise awareness about challenges faced by intellectually disabled individuals and foster inclusion through sports. Earlier fundraising efforts raised a total of RM1,125 to support the cause.

Wildlife Week

More than 200 students and staff joined hands to learn about wildlife conservation, adopt responsible pet practices, and support animal shelters through donations and toy workshops.

Together with WWF, Zoo Negara, Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation, Sunway Lagoon Wildlife Park, and more, the event included live animal showcases, interactive booths, and a Pet Toy Workshop that saw its proceeds going to selected animal shelters.

EcoHarmony: A Month for Nature

Month-long initiatives included plogging, upcycling workshops, tree planting, and soap-making from coffee grounds, promoting sustainable living and eco-conscious habits.

As always, SSV held their annual flagship events too

The Welcoming Party in October introduced new members to the organisation, fostered connections among members, and recognised the contributions of active volunteers from previous intakes.

Meanwhile, the 2025 edition of the Shoebox Project provided over 190 gifts to underprivileged communities, raised more than RM14,700, and ran educational workshops that improved student engagement by 30–37%.

The project provides purposeful, sustainable support to underprivileged communities including orphanages, PPR communities, OKU homes, NGO schools, and Orang Asli villages.

From sustainability drives to empowering children and supporting health and wellness, SSV continues to leave a meaningful mark on campus and beyond

With its strong volunteer culture and record-breaking initiatives, SSV proves that student leadership isn't just about titles; it's about touching lives and making a difference.
