Sunway Student Volunteers (SSV), one of the largest student leadership bodies at Sunway University, is proving that volunteering can create real, lasting change

With nearly 2,000 active members across five departments, SSV empowers students to make a meaningful impact while aligning their efforts with the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This year, SSV marked a decade of giving back with Shoebox Project 2025, celebrating 10 years of supporting communities in need since the initiative began in 2015 as Shoebox Christmas.

The project aims to provide long-term benefits and care to underprivileged communities, addressing challenges such as access to education, clean water, and mobility support for people with disabilities.

Here's a look at the impact Shoebox Project 2025 has made across communities:

  • NGO schools: Students received shoeboxes filled with stationery and educational items, alongside workshops run with Akar Umbi Society. Older students participated in modules on overcoming mental barriers and building support systems, while younger children explored resource management and self-actualisation through hands-on activities like blindbox challenges and tower-making.

  • Orphanages: Children received tailored school uniforms and essential school supplies, with measurement events ensuring perfect fits.

  • OKU communities: Mobility aids such as wheelchairs and walkers were distributed to improve independence and quality of life.

  • Orang Asli communities: Water filters were provided to tackle the ongoing lack of safe drinking water, building on last year's initiative with water quality tests and surveys to understand community needs.

To make all this possible, SSV organised multiple fundraising activities at Sunway University

This included physical and virtual donation drives, a charity bazaar, a movie night, and an arts and crafts event called Kindness in Colour.

Shoebox Project 2025 was aligned with key SDGs, including No Poverty, Quality Education, Clean Water and Sanitation, Reduced Inequalities, and Partnerships for the Goals, demonstrating SSV's commitment to sustainable and meaningful volunteerism.
