If you've ever wished KL had a place where you could browse books at 3am, sip a smoothie at sunrise, or pretend to study while staring dramatically into the distance… your moment has arrived
At the stroke of midnight this Wednesday, 10 December, BookXcess is officially opening The Library at Sunway Square, the largest 24-hour bookstore in Southeast Asia, right here in Bandar Sunway.
This place isn't just "big". It's massive. It's extra. It's the kind of bookstore that makes you want to read even if your last book purchase was a planner you never used.
Stretching across 38,000 sq ft and two levels, The Library by BookXcess is designed to make you stop in your tracks
One of the first features you'll encounter is The Cone, an architectural sculpture that pays tribute to Sunway's origins as a tin-mining town, creating a symbolic link between the past and the present.
Then there's Whale Fall, a breathtaking installation by Malaysian artist CO2. It's crafted entirely out of damaged books rescued from the BookXcess warehouse, books that would've been thrown away but have now been transformed into a glowing, otherworldly centrepiece.
Just as a whale carcass forms a new ecosystem on the ocean floor, these damaged books have been given new life through art.
And if you look up, you'll notice books suspended from the ceiling, giving the illusion of flying books
It's a whimsical reminder that reading can be unexpectedly sexy, the bookstore shared during a preview today, 8 December.
The Library by BookXcess is divided into four main zones: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Children, and Non-Books. Within these areas, you'll find more than 40 categories to browse through.
To make things even better, the non-fiction section is the largest, offering an incredible range of genres for every type of reader.
The children's section comes next, packed with colourful titles and educational gems, followed by an extensive non-fiction area that covers everything from personal development to history and art.
And in case your jaw isn't already on the floor: every single book in this entire space is handpicked by the founder himself.
Upstairs, you'll find a spacious mezzanine area lined with desks, chairs, and cosy corners for anyone who wants to study, work, brainstorm, or simply hang out with a book
It's quiet, airy, and the kind of space that makes you want to be productive, even if you end up wandering off to browse more books or stationery instead.
This is also where you'll find Becon Stationery, a proudly Malaysian brand that sells everything from pens and notebooks to beautifully designed accessories you'll definitely convince yourself you need.
If your idea of a perfect day includes books and food, The Library has you covered
Kenny Hills Bakers has set up shop here, serving their signature pastries, organic breads, and a brand-new menu created specially for Sunway.
Right beside it is Good Mojo Smoothies, the first-ever smoothie outlet by Kenny Hills, offering clean, energising drinks for when you need a pick-me-up during your late-night reading spree.
And adding even more personality to the space is FRAK/TURE Fashion Studio, an avant-garde thrift and fashion store with a brutalist, engineered aesthetic, perfect for anyone who loves clothes with attitude.
All of this comes with a lovely view of Sunway South Quay Lake, making it a place where you can read, snack, shop, people-watch, and vibe all in one go.
