When people say Penang, your brain probably auto-fills with beaches, street art, or char kuey teow
But move over, George Town 'cause Seberang Perai has just launched the Penang River Cruise.
It's a two-hour ride along Sungai Juru, once notorious for being filled with rubbish.
Fast forward to today, and the river has been cleaned up into a surprising eco-tourism spot, complete with mangroves, fishing villages, and aquaculture farms.

The cruise sets off from River Park Jetty (in Auto-City Juru) and drifts past traditional villages and lush mangroves, with Bukit Juru photobombing in the background
According to Bernama, if you're lucky, you'll catch the 'Sky Mirror' phenomenon, when the water turns into a literal glassy reflection of boats and greenery.

Expect to see monkeys swinging from the trees, black giant squirrels launching themselves between branches, and migratory birds gliding overhead like they own the place
If you're extra observant, you might even spot mangrove snakes, pit vipers, or the elusive dog-faced water snake.
Researchers have reported six different habitats along this river, according to Buletin Mutiara.

It's not just sightseeing, you'll get your hands dirty too
You can try crab trapping, net fishing, and scooping clams using traditional tools.

Kids love it. Adults love it too (especially when you realise how bad you are at catching crabs).
Either way, it's a fun way to sneak in some local culture and sustainability lessons without anyone realising it's educational.
