If you're travelling and plan to drive when you're overseas, you will need a physical driving licence

While most of us have transitioned to using a digital driving licence on the MyJPJ app, unfortunately, this feature is not yet recognised in most overseas countries.

If you're planning to rent a car and drive overseas, you'll still need a physical driving licence.

The good news is that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has made it much easier to get your physical driving licence in 2026

Previously, only certain JPJ branches (like JPJ Wangsa Maju and JPJ Selangor/Padang Jawa) offered printing in KL and Selangor. UTCs and Pos Malaysia didn't offer it.

But now, you can apply at any JPJ branch and all UTC counters nationwide, with no restrictions.

NOTE: Smaller JPJ branches still may face occasional stock issues, so it's worth calling ahead if you're in a remote area.

Another thing that changed this year is that you no longer need to bring proof of overseas travel

All you have to bring is your original MyKad (and a copy).

Proof of overseas travel like flight tickets and hotel bookings are no longer needed if you want to print your physical driving licence in Malaysia.

How much does it cost?

Category Fee
Malaysian citizens RM20
Non-Malaysian citizens RM100
Senior citizens (60+) Free
Class A1 & A licence holders Free
Registered OKU (PWD) Free

If you choose to renew your licence (RM30/year), the printing cost is waived.

Here's a step-by-step process to getting your physical driving licence printed:

  1. Go to any JPJ branch or UTC counter (not Pos Malaysia)
  2. Take your number and tell the officer you want to 'cetak lesen' (print licence)
  3. Fill in the form they give you
  4. Pay the fee (RM20 for Malaysians, waived if renewing)
  5. Collect your physical licence

The MyJPJ digital licence (e-LMM) remains fully valid for driving in Malaysia and for enforcement checks

This update is mainly for people who need a physical card for overseas travel, car rentals abroad, or foreign authorities that don't accept digital licences.

The bottom line is: Yes, you can still print your physical licence for overseas travel, but it's now much simpler

No travel proof needed, available at all JPJ/UTC counters, and would-be free for seniors, PWD, and motorcycle licence holders.

If you're planning to travel soon, go get it printed early to avoid any rush.
