1. Fans

Fans run daily in Malaysian households and push through tonnes of dust, but most people only wipe the blades and ignore the motor vents. When dust chokes the vents, the motor runs hotter and wears out faster.

How often should you service: Wipe fan blades monthly, hire a professional cleaning service for a deep clean which includes the motor every six months.

Service cost:

  • Free (DIY) for fan blades
  • Fan cleaning services range from RM80 to RM120 per unit. Usually a discount is given if you clean multiple units at once.

Worst-case scenario if you don't maintain: Burnt motor coils may cost RM150 to RM300 to replace (sometimes cheaper to buy a new fan)

2. Air conditioners

If your air conditioner starts feeling weaker or musty, it's usually not the filter, it's the evaporator fins and drain pan that are choked with slime and mould. This makes your AC work harder and consume more electricity.

How often should you service: Wash filters monthly, schedule professional servicing every six months

Service cost: RM80 to RM150 per indoor unit

Worst-case scenario if you don't maintain: Dirty coils can lead to gas leaks or PCB (circuit board) failures that cost RM300 to RM700 to fix

3. Washing machines

Soap scum and softener residue create a sticky layer called biofilm inside the drum. Once it builds up, clothes come out smelling musty, and the gasket becomes permanently mouldy.

How often should you service: Run a hot empty cycle every month + clean detergent drawer every two to three months

Service cost: Free (DIY)

Worst-case scenario if you don't maintain: Mouldy rubber gasket replacement can cost RM200 to RM450

4. Fridges

Your fridge runs 24/7, but the condenser coils at the back often get ignored. When these coils collect dust, your fridge has to run longer to stay cold, which wears out the compressor faster.

How often should you service: Wipe seals weekly, clean interior every three months. You should also hire a professional to help clean up the condenser coils for your fridge.

Service cost:

  • Free (DIY)
  • Professional fridge cleaning usually costs from RM100 to RM150 depending on the size of the fridge and parts that need to be cleaned

Worst-case scenario if you don't maintain: Compressor replacement costs RM500 to RM1,200, and depending on the model, it's sometimes cheaper to replace the fridge

5. Vacuum cleaners

Most suction loss is actually caused by clogged HEPA filters, not a "weak motor". Dust, hair, and fine powder clog the pores and block airflow.

How often should you service: Empty dustbin after each use, wash and fully dry filters every one to two months

Service cost: Replacement filters cost RM30 to RM120

Worst-case scenario if you don't maintain: Motor overheating and burn-out can cost RM200 to RM400 to repair

6. Water filters

We rely on water filters to keep water clean, yet many of us forget to change the cartridges. Old filters clog the internal housing and bacteria can actually leach back into the drinking water.

How often should you service: Replace cartridge every three to six months (varies by brand + usage)

Service cost: RM80 to RM250 per cartridge

Worst-case scenario if you don't maintain: Internal contamination may require a deep cleaning costing around RM200 to RM300, or a full system replacement ranging from RM600 to RM2,000

7. Air fryers

Oil residue doesn't just stay in the basket, it splatters up onto the heating element. Once the element gets coated in hardened grease, it can lead to smoke, off flavours, and eventual coil failure.

How often should you service: Wash basket/tray after each cook, wipe coil every two to three uses when its fully cool to avoid burns

Service cost: Free (DIY)

Worst-case scenario if you don't maintain: Heating coil replacement may cost RM180 to RM300, if the PCB (circuit board which holds all the electrical components) is damaged, getting a new unit is usually cheaper.

TL;DR, regular small cleaning = preventing expensive big repairs
