Penang just got a stunning new heritage stay, and it's hiding in plain sight
Right across from the iconic Blue Mansion (aka Cheong Fatt Tze, which you might recognise from Crazy Rich Asians), a once-forgotten 1904 annexe has been transformed into The Qing Suites, a serene boutique escape that blends century-old stories with modern-day calm.

The brand-new collection of 13 boutique suites, once home to the mansion's original servants' quarters, has been lovingly brought back into the Cheong Fatt Tze story after more than a century
It's a beautiful mix of heritage charm and modern comfort, all wrapped up in that timeless Penang personality we all love.
After Cheong Fatt Tze's passing in 1916, the mansion's future took a rocky turn, passing through multiple owners, falling into disrepair, and eventually being carved up and separated.
It wasn't until celebrated conservation architect Professor Ar Laurence Loh began a massive restoration in 1989 that The Blue Mansion was reborn, eventually winning the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Award for Most Excellent Project in 2000.

Fast forward to today, the Cheong Fatt Tze legacy continues under managing director Shen Loh-Lim, who dreamed of bringing the annexe back into the fold. Plans began in 2020, stalled during the pandemic, and finally resumed in 2023 with Prof Laurence Loh and Arkitek LLA once again leading the restoration.
Now, after years of meticulous work, The Qing Suites stand as a modern extension of Cheong Fatt Tze's vision — a place where heritage meets contemporary boutique living.

Designed as serene hideaways, the suites range from 44 to 67.3 sq m and are filled with artistic touches from local creators, including handcrafted ceramics, custom furniture, and décor inspired by The Blue Mansion's roots
Guests can choose between three suite types:
1. Signature Suites – with prime views of the historic Blue Mansion
2. Terrace Suites – featuring a rooftop garden overlooking George Town's charming streets
3. Garden Suites – each with its own private walled garden for ultimate zen vibes

A standout feature of the hotel is Virtue TCM, a Traditional Chinese Medicine–focused spa — the first of its kind in a heritage hotel in Southeast Asia
Every wellness journey begins with a personalised consultation and pulse diagnosis before you're guided through one of their signature rituals:
