From the lush orchards of Malaysia comes the durian variety, Tekka (also lovingly dubbed the Musang Queen), the regal sister to the famous Musang King

Though she may not get the same limelight, durian enthusiasts revere her for unique traits that hold her own in the kingdom of fruits!

Officially registered in 1987, Tekka came from Banting, Selangor, said to be growing wild among bamboo shoots

According to DuriAddict, Tekka was registered under the Malaysian agricultural code D160 by Lim Hai Chia in Banting, Selangor, hence its name Tekka, meaning "bamboo leg" in the Hokkien dialect.

Gaining notoriety for its distinct flavour and pedigree, Tekka earned the affectionate nickname Musang Queen, playfully coined to parallel Musang King.

Inside, pale‑yellow (but sometimes darker) flesh may reveal a central, elegant "flower heart" unique to this queen

On the outside, Tekka has a dull greenish-brown oval‑bulky husk, with distinctive concave thorns and a "valley" at the core, according to MyRehat.

Its oval, stout shape bears pyramid-like thorns and a star-patterned bottom, reminiscent of yet distinguishable from Musang King.

Tekka packs a more assertive bitterness than its famous cousin, if that's what you're into

As for the texture though, it's creamy yet moderately wet, with slightly looser flesh than Musang King.

Though scarce compared to Musang King, durian fanatics prize the Musang Queen

MyRehat even ranks this fruit #3, just behind Musang King at #1.

The list describes Musang Queen's edginess perfectly: "However, it is not recommended for first-timers, like [the] Musang King, due to its acquired taste, which is not well liked by the average durian eater".

Where can you find her?

Musang Queen is typically grown in Johor and Pahang, according to Ninety-Nine Old Trees.

While it's not as "mainstream" as Musang King, keep an eye out during peak season and ask local sellers for Tekka or Musang Queen (D160).
