It's durian season in Malaysia, and truckloads of the fruit can be seen all across the country

For many Malaysians, durian season isn't just an annual event; it is a deeply cherished cultural highlight. Starting as early as May, durian stalls begin popping up along streets nationwide, signalling the start of this much-awaited season.

Yet, its distinctively strong and pungent odour, while cherished by enthusiasts, can be quite off-putting to others. This is particularly true when the aroma lingers in confined spaces such as cars or on one's hands after indulging in the "king of fruits".

Here are five tips to keep that durian odour in check:

1. Remove durian odour from your car by using the fruit's stem

It is widely believed that the stem of the durian fruit possesses properties capable of neutralising its potent odour.

One suggested method involves breaking open the stem and placing it over the car's air vents. Some say this simple technique can help absorb the lingering aroma.

It's worth trying out this trick the next time you're transporting durians in your car.

2. Get rid of the durian odour from your hands with the husk

After enjoying durian, you can use the fruit's husk to neutralise the lingering odour on your hands.

The method involves rinsing a durian shell under running water, then using the water that flows off the husk to wash your hands. It's said to help neutralise the fruit's strong smell almost instantly.

Some also suggest rubbing your hands with a durian seed, though it is said to be less effective than using the husk. But hey, it's worth a shot.

3. Avoid durian breath by drinking plain water from the husk

You've likely heard the traditional advice about drinking with water poured from the inside of a durian husk. This age-old tip from elders is indeed said to be effective in preventing strong durian breath.

Drinking this "husk water" is also believed to help cool the body down, as durian is often thought to raise body temperature.

It's also a good idea to drink plenty of plain water to help neutralise the durian's effects on your digestive system.

Another popular belief is that mangosteen is excellent for eliminating durian breath.

4. Place lemon slices in your refrigerator to neutralise durian odour

Use lemon slices. First, cut a fresh lemon into wedges. Then, place them in different parts of the fridge to get rid of the smell. If you don't have a lemon at home, you can try other citrus fruits such as orange, lime, and grapefruit.

Just like with your car, you can also split a few durian stems and store them in the fridge to control the odour.

5. Save your container from the pungent durian odour

For effective removal of durian odour from containers, employing a combination of cleaning agents and natural odour absorbers is recommended. Substances like baking soda, vinegar, and even citrus peels or slices can significantly help in neutralising the strong, pungent aroma.
