According to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup last August, the team – made up of 50 Pengerak Perpaduan members – was formed at least two years ago to fend off racial and political accusations and attacks on social media.

Then, just last week on 8 March, 10 NGOs pledged to support UMNO by becoming "keyboard warriors" to counter allegations made against the country's leaders.
