Here’s How I Traveled Europe Alone

I did it and so can you.

What comes to your mind when the inspiration to get out of the country alone strikes? Do you dismiss the idea because it's too expensive or risky?

Well, try to give it a second thought. I did it and so can you.

I wouldn't say it's that easy, but it can be done and it can be one of the most beautiful times of your life.

Try exploring your own country first and see how it goes.

One significant advantages to traveling solo is you don't find yourself compromising with anyone's schedule…

… or following a strict plan or itinerary all the time! You are free to make your own plans and change it anytime! Convenience is one of the many perks of solo travel, but it requires patience, bravery and creativity to be able to do it on a budget and still make the most of it.

I have been traveling solo domestically and around South East Asia starting 2007, but one of my many favorite trips happened in 2015 when the death of someone so dear to me and a couple of more challenges led me decide to see new places and faces.

Traveling made me even more confident and independent. I am convinced that I can indeed take care of myself.

It made me appreciate the beauty of simplicity and minimalism and made me even more grateful to the blessings I already have. **Seeing other countries made me appreciate my own country and more so I am touched by the kindness that I find everywhere I go**. I was liberated from old thoughts about myself and about the world in general. It is painfully exciting.

The best part is getting out of my comfort zone. It is when I am out of the safe zone that my mind is more open.

Travel will demand from you to be open, to see and experience things you don't normally see and experience at home, to engage in great conversations, and to listen to every interesting personal stories of the many people you meet. It also includes great conversations with yourself, hearing the silence of your solitude.

I set my solo month-long journey to Europe in Spring of 2015

I didn't know anybody in the places I was going to visit except Denmark. I have to admit that it takes a bit of bravery, some smarts and adventurous spirit to be able to do what I did. Before my trip, I have previously contacted selected locals who were willing to adopt me or meet with me during my stay.

I used Airbnb and Couchsurfing and I was surprised at how amazing these websites can be! I began my travel feeling anxious and excited about the next few weeks I was to spend in Europe.

If things didn't go according to plan, I made sure I was ready with the following:

1. ATM card (which should be activated for international access at local bank before traveling)

2. Credit card

3. Cash

4. Phone with WiFi access so I can search for accommodations and maps and other important information and of course for getting in touch with family and friends

My first destination was Paris

My heart leaped when I saw Eiffel Tower, The Louvre and Chateau Versailles. Such stunning monuments, a testament of man's ingenuity and greatness. Everywhere I look was just magnificent.

From Paris, I flew to Denmark

The weather was colder, but it has a more laid back vibe. It has its own charm and character and it wouldn't be ranked as the number one happiest country in the world for nothing.

Then off I went to Barcelona

Some of the people I meet in my travels regard this place as one of their favorites. Gaudi's art is very influential in this beautiful city.

My next stop was Venice to see the place just real quick

Two or three days were enough to see the entire tourist area. My friend was even able to take me to a nearby town called Padova where St. Padova's remains were buried.

Then I went to see Rimini to have some relaxing times at the beach and also to watch triathlon which I occasionally participate in

Rome, which was my last destination, also did not disappoint. It had the warmest climates of all countries I have been to and seeing Pope Francis was one of the touching experiences I have had.

I feel so grateful to have seen these stunning places  each unique with its own charm, beauty and significant cultures

I am grateful to the people I have met and who have been so good to me. Some of them have remained close and friends with me while some I might never see again. But what's important is we've shared memories together and time is one very important thing in life we can give because we can never take it back.

**Time is a precious gift we can share.**

I can sense the look of surprise in some fellow travelers when I tell them I come from the Philippines

It's not too often that they meet one. I hope this inspires other Filipina women out there to try this kind of adventure. If I can do it, so can you.

But when you so decide to travel, know that it's a step to a newer you, to a world that is waiting to be discovered.

Life is a revelation. Let it unfold before you.
