Everyone has been talking about the Philippines winning the arbitration case against China (specifically Beijing) regarding the legal basis of maritime rights in the South China Sea
According to the final [497-page ruling] (https://pca-cpa.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/175/2016/07/PH-CN-20160712-Award.pdf), "There was no legal basis for China to claim historic rights to resources within the sea areas falling within the nine-dash line."
In a statement, Paul Reichler, Philippines's chief counsel of the Foley Hoag law firm, said: "This historic decision not only vindicates the Philippines' claims, it provides much-needed clarity concerning the Parties' legal rights and obligations under the Law of the Sea Convention to which they and more than 180 other States are signatories."
"The Tribunal's ruling not only benefits the Philippines, it also benefits other States bordering the South China Sea like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. If China's nine-dash line is invalid as to the Philippines, it is equally invalid to those States and, indeed, the rest of the international community," added Reichler.
