A Chinese family ended up devouring 5.5kg of durian in just 30 minutes outside Chiang Mai International Airport in Thailand because the pungent fruit could not be brought onboard
According to Chinese media outlets, the incident took place on 16 September and was initially shared on Douyin by a traveller surnamed Li.
The tourist explained that his father had purchased the durians earlier that morning before their return trip to China, intending to enjoy the fruit before arriving at the airport.
The family, however, ended up eating a few other meals along the way. When they arrived at the airport, with the boxes of fresh durian still sitting among their luggage, they decided to finish it on the spot.
"When you have a stubborn father who buys 5.5kg of durian right before a flight, and your family has no choice but to eat it all," Li wrote, posting a video of himself grimacing while his father cheerfully opens another box.

Li said each family member consumed four to five pieces, not wanting to waste or throw away the precious fruit
However, Li said he ate so much that he "never wants to see durian again in his life".
The family managed to finish the fruit within half an hour and boarded the flight, though Li shared that they still smelled of durian while boarding and apologised to fellow passengers.
"I'm truly sorry. We won't be so stubborn again. I never want to hear the word 'durian' again," joked the traumatised traveller.
Li's video quickly went viral, garnering over 130,000 likes as amused netizens laughed at the durian dilemma
Many netizens also shared similar predicaments, recalling times they had also been "forced" to finish durians outside airports.
"I once ate 5.5kg of durian all by myself at the entrance of Yantai Penglai International Airport… My friend had asked me to take them back to Beijing. It's been eight years, I'll remember that for a lifetime," one Douyin user reminisced.

Another commented, "A few years ago at Zhuhai Airport in Guangdong, someone brought four durians… I went over to help them eat one."

Meanwhile, another netizen joked, "Whether or not you made it on the plane, I'm sure you ended up with a headache — or maybe even a nosebleed."

Many airports and airlines prohibit strong-smelling foods such as durian in both carry-on and checked luggage, though some may allow them if vacuum-sealed in airtight packaging.
