A viral video has captured a Chinese tourist mistakenly attending a Hari Raya open house in Langkawi, Kedah, after confusing it with a restaurant

In a 28-second TikTok clip uploaded last week, the Chinese man can be seen looking at his phone while enjoying a plate of food and a cup of rose syrup.

Sitting alone at a table, he drew curious glances from other attendees.

Speaking to SAYS, the person who uploaded the video, Linda Orow, shared that the man, believed to be a tourist from China, was staying at a nearby hotel in Taman Sri Wawasan, Ulu Melaka.

"We were having a Hari Raya open house celebration there last Thursday, 24 April," said the 43-year-old Proton salesperson.

In an update video, Linda shared that the tourist entered the house around 11pm and headed straight to the food station

She approached him and tried to communicate, despite having only a basic knowledge of Mandarin.

After some difficulty, a friend fluent in Mandarin stepped in to help. It was then that they discovered that the man was simply hungry and out searching for food late at night.

"The kakak explained to him that this is not a restaurant but a Hari Raya open house. He became embarrassed and offered to leave.

"But we stopped him, [saying], 'Anyone who wants to eat must eat. You cannot leave without eating'," she recalled.

They offered him the buffet spread that included dishes such as squid, lontong, satay, nasi biryani, and chicken masala.

"We gave him a little bit of everything to try. He was shy… He sat there eating…

"After finishing his meal, he tried to pay us. We refused, explaining that no payment should be accepted at an open house."

The tourist expressed his gratitude repeatedly in Mandarin before leaving.

Reflecting on the incident, Linda shared that she and her friends found it to be a hilarious and memorable experience they would cherish for years to come.

At the time of writing, the video of the tourist dining at the open house has garnered over 1.5 million views on TikTok.
