A mischievous "masked burglar" broke into a liquor store in Virginia, US, early Saturday morning, 29 December, helping itself to bottles of whisky before eventually collapsing on the bathroom floor

The incident was shared on Facebook by the Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter, playfully calling out the "suspect" — a raccoon.

"Suspect apprehended after liquor-fuelled rampage. Black Friday break-in at Ashland ABC store," the post read.

According to the agency, one of its officers responded to an unusual 4am call about a break-in, where the culprit had knocked items off shelves and then passed out in the bathroom.

Photos attached showed broken bottles scattered across the store and the raccoon sprawled on the bathroom floor.

Thankfully, the officer safely secured the raccoon and brought it back to the shelter to sober up "before questioning"

"After a few hours of sleep and zero signs of injury (other than maybe a hangover and poor life choices), he was safely released back to the wild, hopefully having learned that breaking and entering is not the answer," they said.

The Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter also praised the responding officer, Martin, for handling the situation with professionalism and humour.
