If you've ever worn a smartwatch that felt like a tiny brick on your wrist, you'll appreciate what Garmin has done with the vivoactive 5

It's one of the brand's lightest and sleekest watches to date — a fitness-focused smartwatch that's all about comfort, clarity, and convenience.

Right now, it's going for a huge discount at RM999 (down from RM1,480), making it even more tempting for anyone looking to kickstart their fitness journey without diving too deep into the techy stuff.

That said, the smartwatch does have its shortcomings you need to be aware of.

At just 36g (band included), the Garmin vivoactive 5 feels almost weightless. You can wear it all day — at the gym, on runs, or even while you sleep — without it getting in the way.

The slim 11mm profile also means it doesn't snag on sleeves or gloves, which is a small but very welcome detail.

The 1.2-inch AMOLED display is bright, crisp, and easy to read whether you're out on a run or checking your stats indoors.

It's functional and looks great, too. The colours pop, and the animations are smooth, giving it a premium feel without the premium weight.

When it comes to fitness tracking, Garmin has nailed the basics here with the vivoactive 5

It supports over 30 sport modes, including running, cycling, swimming, yoga, and even more unusual ones like "gaming" and "platform tennis".

The built-in GPS is accurate enough for daily workouts, with only minor drops under dense tree cover.

For anyone looking to monitor health more closely, the watch tracks heart rate, heart rate variability, sleep quality, stress, and Body Battery — a feature that tells you how much energy you've got left in the tank. It's genuinely useful for pacing your day and knowing when to rest or push harder.

The touchscreen interface is smooth, intuitive, and easy to get the hang of

There are only two buttons on the side, which keeps things simple.

Paired with Garmin's Connect app, you can dive into detailed stats or just stick to the basics — depending on how nerdy you want to get.

Garmin claims up to 11 days of battery life in smartwatch mode, but most users can expect around five to seven days with regular GPS use. That's still decent, especially given the bright display. Battery Saver mode also helps extend usage if you're running low before your next charge.

However, if you're planning to climb Mount Kinabalu or explore deep forest trails, the Garmin vivoactive 5 isn't the watch for you

It lacks an altimeter (for measuring elevation gain) and navigation features like maps or breadcrumb tracking. In other words, it's more "city run" than "backcountry hike".

Also, while it's solid on the fitness front, it falls short on smartwatch conveniences. There's no Garmin Pay, no message replies, and no offline music support. You'll still get notifications, but you can't interact with them much.

That "11-day" battery claim is optimistic. With daily GPS workouts, notifications, and sleep tracking, you'll probably be charging it every five days or so. It's not terrible, but something to keep in mind if you're used to older Garmins that could last two weeks without a charge.

The vivoactive 5 doesn't have dual-frequency GPS like Garmin's premium models, which means you might see minor tracking errors in areas with tall buildings or thick trees. For casual runners, it's fine. For serious distance athletes, it might be a dealbreaker.

That said, the Garmin vivoactive 5 nails what most people want in a fitness watch: it's comfortable, tracks all the essentials, and doesn't overcomplicate things

If your goal is to move more, sleep better, and keep tabs on your health, the Garmin vivoactive 5 will fit seamlessly into your day. You might even forget you're wearing it… until it reminds you to stand up and stretch.

It's not built for ultramarathons or mountain treks, but it's more than enough for daily workouts, runs, yoga sessions, or gym training. The simple interface makes it a great fit even for first-time smartwatch users.

At RM999 (down from RM1,480), it's one of the best-value fitness smartwatches you can get right now especially if you want something that feels light, looks great, and just works.
