The Negeri Sembilan state government plans to slap a RM2,000 fine on anyone caught drinking alcohol in public areas

The plan comes following a surge in complaints from residents.

According to Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun, people have been consuming alcohol at parks, playgrounds, and beaches, especially at night.

He added that many perpetrators leave behind empty bottles and rubbish.

Aminuddin said the state government previously issued warnings but is now taking a tougher stance

"We used to just give warnings, but now we will take immediate action, including issuing fines," he told Utusan Malaysia.

"There are already provisions under the law, and we will enforce them."

He added that public spaces meant for families shouldn't be "tarnished by immoral behaviour"

"These activities usually take place at night and they often leave behind empty bottles and rubbish, which leads to complaints from residents," he said.

The move is aimed at protecting the cleanliness of recreational areas and addressing the sensitivities of the local community.

Enforcement will begin soon, although no specific timeline has been announced yet.
