A computer mouse that smells good?

When ASUS first introduced the Fragrance Mouse MD101, it was easy to be sceptical.

It sounded like a novelty or perhaps even a gimmick. But after testing it out daily, I can honestly say this is one of those rare surprises in tech where an unusual idea is not only functional, but quietly brilliant.

It's a lightweight, wireless mouse with solid everyday performance. It comes in two colourways: Iridescent White and Rose Clay. Both are pretty, and dare I say it, feminine.

The built-in fragrance feature is genuinely lovely. Admittedly, it might not be for everyone, but I honestly adore it.

The star feature of the MD101 is, of course, its integrated fragrance capsule

Housed discreetly in the base, this capsule emits a light, clean scent that refreshes your workspace without ever becoming overpowering.

It doesn't transfer to your hands or cling to surfaces. Instead, it gently fills your immediate area with a pleasant aroma that lifts the experience of using your device.

I found myself constantly telling my colleagues to smell my mouse's butt because I'm so mature like that.

A note in their manual states not to use 100% pure essential oils. Instead, to choose essential oils for reed diffusers, ultrasonic diffusers, and aroma stones.

It left my laptop bag smelling fresh, which is never a bad thing. Quirky? Absolutely. Necessary? Not at all.

But in practice, it's a small touch that made me smile at the start of every work day.

Scented mouse aside, the tactile experience of the MD101 is worth highlighting

The scroll wheel glides effortlessly, giving just enough control without resistance, while the clicks feel buttery-soft and whisper-quiet.

It's an infinite upgrade to my previous RM50 mouse that literally creaked when I used the scroll wheel.

While it's definitely not made for gaming, it's suitable for daily office work and casual online browsing, navigating without fuss and consistently delivering a smooth and satisfying feel.

ASUS keeps the design understated and clean

The matte finish offers a soft texture and the symmetrical build is comfortable for the hand. Its compact form is ideal for portability, and at under 80 grams, it's light enough to carry around all day without feeling flimsy.

I only wish it was a little larger. I have small hands and even then, it felt a little too tiny.

Connectivity is handled via a 2.4GHz wireless USB dongle and doesn't require any additional software

Plug it in and it works instantly, with stable, lag-free tracking throughout.

Compatible with Windows, Chrome, and macOS devices, the built-in 2.4 GHz wireless and Bluetooth technology ensures seamless dual-mode connectivity.

With up to 1600 DPI, the MD101's optical sensor is more than capable for day-to-day use. It tracks smoothly across most surfaces and feels responsive whether you're clicking through tabs or editing photos.

It runs on a single AA battery, with ASUS estimating months of use on a single charge.

The ASUS Fragrance Mouse MD101 could've easily ended up as a fun concept with little staying power, but instead, it's a surprisingly capable, thoughtfully designed wireless mouse that also happens to smell amazing

The fragrance feature is far more pleasant and practical than expected, adding a small but noticeable upgrade to your everyday routine.

Am I gonna miss this review unit once the loan period is over? Definitely. But would I go out of my way to purchase a nice smelling mouse? Probably not.
