Malaysia recorded an average of five rape cases a day over the past decade
According to the New Straits Times, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said police investigated a total of 17,609 cases between 2015 and 2025.
Of the cases investigated, only 7,090 resulted in charges.
The data was provided in a written parliamentary reply to Kepong member of parliament Lim Lip Eng.
The figures reveal a significant gap between reports filed and cases that result in prosecution.

Johor followed with 2,006 cases and 806 charges, while Sabah and Kedah recorded 1,817 and 1,465 cases, respectively.
Perlis saw the lowest figures in the country, with 275 investigations and 116 charges during the same period.

Lim questioned why an initial rape charge was reduced to using criminal force to outrage modesty.
The home minister explained that the Attorney-General has discretion to amend charges based on available evidence.
"The amendments are usually made to ensure a high probability of conviction in court," said Saifuddin.
