PDRM Investigating Viral Petrol Station Slap Incident Involving Off-Duty Officer

A 21-year-old man has come forward to lodge a report.

Police have confirmed that the man seen slapping a motorcyclist in a viral video was an off-duty police officer attached to the Johor Bahru Utara district police headquarters

The 33-second dashcam clip shows a motorcyclist with a woman riding pillion preparing to leave a petrol station when he is blocked by another rider and suddenly slapped by a man rushing towards him.

Although the footage is dated October 2023, Johor Bahru Utara police said the incident is believed to have occurred at about 6.50pm on Sunday, 11 January, at a petrol station in Taman Perling, Johor Bahru.

In a statement yesterday, 12 January, Johor Bahru Utara acting police chief Supt Azrol Anuar Nor said one of the men involved in the video has been identified as a police officer from the district, who was off duty at the time.

An internal investigation has since been launched

Azrol said the police view any allegations of misconduct involving officers or personnel seriously, and that firm action will be taken if investigations find any breach of the law, regulations, or code of conduct.

At the time, the police had not received a report regarding the incident, but were working to locate the victim to assist with the investigation.

In a follow-up statement today, 13 January, police confirmed that a 21-year-old man has come forward to lodge a report

According to the latest statement, the man claimed he was slapped by a policeman and held for inspection at the petrol station before being taken to the Johor Bahru Utara district police headquarters over an issue with his motorcycle.

The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt.

Police urged the public not to speculate on the matter and called on anyone with information to come forward, assuring that the investigation will be conducted transparently, fairly, and with integrity.
