One person was killed and nine others injured this morning, 12 January, in an explosion involving an air-conditioning compressor at a private university in Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the blast, believed to have been caused by a gas leak from the compressor, occurred in the air-conditioning maintenance area adjacent to the cafeteria on the building's fourth floor.
Technicians were repairing the system at the time of the incident.
The deceased, a 24-year-old contractor, was part of the maintenance team.
Two other contractors sustained serious injuries, while the other victims included a member of the university's management, two foreign cafeteria workers, and four students.
Injuries ranged from burns to wounds caused by flying debris, with some victims in critical condition, according to the New Straits Times.
All were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The area was not crowded, as most students are still on holiday, police said
"Investigations so far have found no elements of criminal activity in this incident," Fadil was quoted as saying.
The Fire and Rescue Department, including its Hazmat and forensic teams, conducted a thorough inspection to ensure the site was safe and to prevent secondary explosions.
A total of 38 firefighters from nearby stations were involved in the operation.
"The area is safe, but a full inspection is being carried out to prevent any subsequent explosions," Fadil added.
