A 90-year-old woman in China has become her son's defence counsel after teaching herself law to represent him in a 117 million yuan (RM68 million) extortion case

The mother, surnamed He, decided to defend her 57-year-old son, Lin, saying she missed him deeply following his arrest in April 2023.

Lin is accused of blackmailing a local entrepreneur for the sum between 2014 and 2017.

Despite her family's objections, He purchased books on criminal law and procedure and began studying them, according to her granddaughter

She also reportedly went to the court every day to study related cases.

"But my grandmother is stubborn, and she did not listen to the advice of others," the granddaughter said, according to South China Morning Post.

The case stems from a business dispute where Lin's partner, Huang, allegedly failed to make timely payments, causing severe losses for Lin's factory

Prosecutors claim Lin then threatened to expose Huang's irregular tax practices to compel payment.

During the 30 July hearing at a court in Zhejiang province, He grew emotional while watching her son. She later felt unwell and, despite doctors advising her to go to hospital, refused to leave the courtroom.

Lin has also hired a professional lawyer to assist his mother in the defence. The trial is ongoing.
