A member of parliament (MP) has criticised an electronics company in Batu Berendam, Melaka, over its response to a sexual harassment complaint made by a female employee

At a press conference in parliament today, 30 July, Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung revealed that the employee had reported her supervisor for inappropriately touching and hugging her without consent, and for pulling her bra strap on one occasion.

According to FMT, Lee said after the employee lodged a formal complaint with the company's human resources department, she was transferred to another department.

Meanwhile, the supervisor allegedly only received a final warning.

Lee also said the company conducted a domestic inquiry, but claimed it did not follow standard procedures.

The case, which allegedly took place in June, was brought to Lee's attention by the Southern Region Electronics Industry Trade Union, which has been supporting the employee

Lee urged the Human Resources Ministry to introduce stronger measures to protect workers and proposed creating an anonymous complaint system.

"I propose that the government consider developing a mobile app with a response mailbox function, Anonymous Response Mailbox, where complainants can check their investigation status and communicate with the authorities without revealing their identity unless they choose to.

"This would help many victims and witnesses who are still afraid to come forward for fear of retaliation," he said, as reported by FMT.

The New Straits Times reported that the case is currently under police investigation.

Lee noted that while the case is being heard at the Anti-Sexual Harassment Tribunal, the core issue lies in how the workplace handled the situation.

"The rights and dignity of every individual, regardless of gender or position, must be protected," he said.
