Beginning next year, children in Malaysia will start preschool at age 5 and Year One at age 6, a year earlier than before

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the change today, 20 January, during the launch of the National Education Plan 2026–2035.

He stressed that the shift will not be mandatory immediately, giving parents, schools, and educators time to prepare for the new structure.

"The move is designed to ensure children are better prepared for formal education while giving schools the time to adapt their learning environments and curricula," Anwar said.

The Ministry of Education is expected to release further details on implementation and support for schools in the coming months

More information will follow as the rollout plan is finalised.
