Unconfirmed reports suggest former Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad died in an airstrike in Tehran on Saturday, 28 February

The 69-year-old was reportedly killed at his residence in eastern Tehran alongside his bodyguards, according to the German Press Agency.

During his tenure from 2005 to 2013, Ahmadinejad was initially favoured by the ruling Shia clergy and conservative parliamentary factions.

By the end of his term, doubts had emerged over his policies. His controversial nuclear stance led to sanctions, triggering a severe economic crisis.

Ahmadinejad drew heavy condemnation for his anti-Semitic remarks and military threats against Israel

His Holocaust denial further isolated Iran on the global stage, making him a divisive figure.

Supporters began to distance themselves towards the end of his presidency. Hardline groups eventually viewed him as a liability.

Details of the airstrike remain limited, while the Iranian Labour News Agency (ILNA) continues to monitor the situation.
