A father in China has earned praise online for taking his young children on a gruelling 800km walk, a journey he says was meant to build their character
According to Jimu News, the father, surnamed Wu, set off on 17 July with his two children, aged 8 and 10, walking from Shenzhen to their hometown of Changsha in a journey that lasted a month.
Wu, who runs a driving school, explained that he wanted to teach his children the value of perseverance.
"My children tend to give up easily and shy away from challenges. I wanted them to be persistent and form a habit of finishing what they start," he said.

During the trek, Wu carried a 10kg backpack, while his children each shouldered a 5kg bag.
He also turned the journey into a budgeting lesson, making them pay for any overspending out of their own money.

The children's mother, Wang, admitted she was initially against the idea due to the hot weather and safety concerns. However, she has since noticed a positive change in her children.
"My daughter is not as finicky as before, while my son is more independent. I hope their journey will benefit their development," she said.
The father's unique parenting method has since been widely praised online.
