UPDATE:

MOE Announces Extra Aidilfitri Holiday On 18 March For All Schools Nationwide

There's good news for Malaysia's school community as the Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced special additional holidays for Hari Raya Aidilfitri in 2026

The additional holidays are meant to give teachers and students more time to prepare for the festivities and celebrate comfortably with their families, reported Sinar Bestari.

According to the announcement, schools in Group A — which includes Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu — will receive one additional day off. The holiday falls on Thursday, 19 March, ahead of Aidilfitri, which is expected to be celebrated on Saturday, 21 March, and Sunday, 22 March.

Meanwhile, schools in Group B — covering Melaka, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, and the Federal Territories, including Kuala Lumpur — will get two additional days off: on Thursday, 19 March, and Friday, 20 March.

The holiday will overlap with the first school term break

What makes it even better is that the Aidilfitri holidays will overlap with the first school term break, giving students a longer period of rest.

  • Group A: Term break from 20 March to 28 March (9 days)
  • Group B: Term break from 21 March to 29 March (9 days)

This situation will likely give families more flexibility to plan trips back to their hometowns or spend quality time with loved ones.

Every year, MOE usually grants additional holidays for several major celebrations in Malaysia, such as Chinese New Year, Deepavali, and Christmas.

The move is seen as an effort to give Malaysia's multiracial community space to celebrate their respective festivals more meaningfully.

For students and school staff, this upcoming break will likely be something to look forward to — not only for the chance to prepare for Hari Raya earlier, but also to enjoy a fairly long rest before the school session resumes.
