Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of 20-year-old Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara
The physiotherapy student at the University of Cyberjaya (UoC) was found murdered in her dormitory on the morning of 24 June.
Police confirmed the arrest of two women and one man, aged between 19 and 20, in connection with the murder. They were apprehended in Johor Bahru and Gemencheh, Negeri Sembilan, less than 48 hours after the case was reported.
Sepang Sessions Court Judge Azaraorani Abdul Rahman granted a seven-day remand order, effective until 3 July, to assist with the ongoing investigation.
The male suspect is allegedly the boyfriend of the victim's housemate
According to Sin Chew Daily, the male suspect is the boyfriend of one of Maniishapriet's housemates and is believed to be a key figure in the case.
Police have not disclosed further details, but confirmed that the suspects are believed to have been known to the victim.
Sepang police chief ACP Norhizam Bahaman said the investigation is being carried out under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
The victim was found in her dormitory unit at Mutiara Ville in Cyberjaya with injuries consistent with blunt force trauma to the head.
The university has suspended two students
In a statement, UoC announced the suspension of two students believed to be connected to the ongoing murder investigation.
"We are deeply saddened by the recent events and are taking firm, immediate steps to ensure our community feels protected and supported," said the university's Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr David Whitford.
The suspensions took effect early Friday and, according to the university, are in line with its zero-tolerance policy towards safety breaches.
The university has also announced heightened security measures at off-campus accommodations, including additional patrols and deployment of more security personnel.
"The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our utmost priority," Whitford added.
The measures come amid intense scrutiny over student housing conditions at Mutiara Ville, which had previously been flagged by students and netizens as lacking adequate safety infrastructure.
