A man in his 40s had a terrifying brush with death when two masked gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on him outside a primary school in Penang
He was waiting to pick up his child from the school in Butterworth.
The incident happened around 5.30pm yesterday, 1 July, outside SK Sungai Nyior, along Jalan Sungai Puyu. It was peak rush hour, with heavy traffic from both after-work and after-school congestion, reported a Chinese daily.
According to eyewitnesses, the man had parked his four-wheel-drive vehicle by the roadside in front of the school when he was ambushed by two men on a motorcycle. Both were fully covered, wearing helmets and face masks, and appeared to know exactly who and where their target was.
The pillion rider allegedly pulled out a pistol and fired multiple shots at the driver's side window of the vehicle.
The gunmen fled the scene immediately after opening fire.
What saved the victim may have been sheer instinct and luck
Several reports suggest that the man noticed the two men approaching and sensed something was off, reported The Star.
Moments before the shots were fired, he reportedly reclined his seat fully to lie back and rest while waiting for his child. That split-second decision likely saved his life; the bullets, although fired at close range, missed him completely.

Images from the scene show at least five bullet holes in the driver's side window
Police later recovered bullet casings and have obtained CCTV footage from the area, according to China Press.
The gunshots caused chaos in the area.
Parents, schoolchildren, and motorists were caught off guard as the sound of gunfire echoed through the street. Some nearby drivers reportedly abandoned their cars and fled in panic, while others rushed to help.

North Seberang Perai district police chief Anuar Abdul Rahman confirmed the incident
Penang police have not released an official statement, but local news portal Scoop reported that authorities are investigating the shooting.
"We are currently tracking down the suspects," Anuar was quoted as saying.
The shooters' motive remains unknown, but the use of masks, a getaway motorcycle, and close-range shots suggests it was a targeted hit, not a random act of violence.
This marks the latest in a string of gun-related attacks reported in Malaysia in recent weeks
