A woman in China saw her hotel bill skyrocket by nearly 280 times after intentionally flooding her room over a refund dispute

The incident occurred in Hainan province on 28 October.

According to South China Morning Post, the guest had booked a room for one night via an online platform for 108 yuan (RM63).

She checked in late but requested a full refund half an hour later, citing a "change of plan" and poor room quality.

The hotel manager, surnamed Xiong, explained that their policy prohibits cancellations after check-in

Staff offered the woman a free upgrade, which she refused.

She proceeded to call the police and a local government hotline to complain.

While waiting, the guest turned on the washbasin's tap and the shower, leaving them running from 2am until early morning.

Hotel staff discovered the incident only when water began leaking from the second-floor room into the lobby below

Xiong stated the room was completely flooded, damaging walls and floors, with an estimated cost of 20,000 yuan (approx. RM11,700).

After the hotel called the police, the woman confessed and agreed to pay almost 30,000 yuan (RM17,500) in compensation.

According to Chinese law, individuals who intentionally destroy property and cause damage exceeding 5,000 yuan (about RM3,000) may face a criminal investigation.
