A 61-year-old man's wedding day in Shanghai turned into a nightmare after he suffered a stroke. Years later, his wife allegedly transferred 1.1 million yuan (RM640,000) from his account, leaving the now-paralysed man with only 42 yuan (RM25).

According to media outlet News Morning Post, the man, surnamed Wang, married Ren Fang, a woman 16 years his junior, in 2016.

On the day of their wedding, Wang collapsed from a stroke, and his health continued to decline over the years.

By 2019, he was paralysed on his left side and bedridden.

After receiving over 2 million yuan (RM1.8 million) in property compensation, Ren became his sole legal guardian and allegedly moved the funds into an account she controlled

Ren argued that the funds were used for his care.

Wang's daughter filed a lawsuit to change the guardianship after discovering the account had been emptied.

Ren argued the money was spent on nursing home bills and health supplements, claiming she withdrew cash to get better interest rates at a bank in her hometown

However, the daughter pointed out that her father's 6,000-yuan (RM3,500) monthly pension was already sufficient to cover all his expenses.

The court ultimately ruled in the daughter's favour, making her and Ren co-guardians.

All financial decisions concerning Wang now require both of their signatures.

The judge remarked, "The essence of guardianship lies not in titles, but in who can genuinely care for an incapacitated loved one."
