A local farmer recently shared that you actually should only wash your eggs right before you're about to use them, and not immediately after purchasing

In an Instagram video on @regenerativefarmers.mas, Michael explained that when laid by hens, eggs have a kind of coating on them. Known as 'bloom', it acts as a protective layer.

That's why Michael's advice is to not wash eggs after you buy them from a store.

"There will be no more protection if you wash away the bloom, and the eggs spoil easily. Only wash them when you want to consume them," he explained.

He also shared that it's common to find dirty eggs in chicken coops, and consuming them is not harmful

According to him, farmers usually don't wash dirty eggs. Eggs that have just a little dirt on them are rubbed clean, while the ones that can't be cleaned are not sold and kept for the farmers' own use instead.

"It's not harmful to consume them. We don't sell them because they look dirty and some customers don't like dirty eggs.

"But to us as farmers, it's the same in terms of nutritional value. It's just the outlook that doesn't look nice," he said.
