LEGO just dropped what it's calling the biggest leap forward in its 50-year history — a proper smart brick
And no, we're not talking about those quirky Bluetooth wheels or little Mario screens from back in the day. This one actually reacts to how you play in real time.
At first glance, the Smart Brick looks like a standard 2×4 LEGO piece
But inside, it houses a custom chip that's even smaller than a LEGO stud — the heart of what LEGO calls its Play Engine.
It can sense motion, orientation, light, and sound. There's even a wireless, local network LEGO built for these pieces (called BrickNet), so smart bricks can 'talk' to each other and respond to nearby smart elements — all without Internet, screens or phone pairing.
That means the spaceship you built out of LEGO doesn't just sit there; it hums, buzzes, lights up, and reacts to how you play with it.

LEGO has paired these bricks with Smart Tags (tiny tiles with digital IDs) and Smart Minifigures that help tell the brick what to play back
Put a Star Wars tag near the brick and suddenly your X-Wing's engines purr.

The first sets launching with this system are part of the LEGO Star Wars Smart Play line, dropping 1 March 2026, with pre-orders opening 9 January
These include classics like Luke's X-Wing, a TIE Fighter, and the Throne Room Duel — all with interactive engine sounds, lightsaber hums, ambient effects, and even theme music moments as you move pieces around.
