Malaysians celebrate two major Islamic festivals, both known as "Raya"

These are Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Aidiladha (also known as Hari Raya Haji). While both are joyful occasions marked by prayers and gatherings, they commemorate completely different things.

The main difference between the two lies in what they celebrate

Hari Raya Aidilfitri marks the end of Ramadan, a month of fasting and spiritual discipline. Basically, it honours the discipline and spiritual resilience demonstrated by Muslims during the holy month of Ramadan.

Hari Raya Haji, on the other hand, commemorates the Prophet Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. In the end, his son was spared, and a ram was sacrificed instead, which is why the tradition of korban (animal sacrifice) is observed.

Only one of the two festivals involves korban, and that's Hari Raya Haji

In the lead-up to Raya Haji, Muslims who have the financial means are encouraged to perform korban by purchasing a goat or a share of a cow. This is often arranged through a mosque, charity, or appointed organiser.

The meat is then divided into three parts: one for themselves, one for family and friends, and one to be donated to those in need.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri, on the other hand, doesn't involve animal sacrifice. Instead, it focuses on spiritual renewal and giving through zakat fitrah. This is a special tithe distributed to those in need before Eid.

Hari Raya Haji coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is a pilgrimage to Mecca where millions of Muslims gather for rituals like Tawaf and standing at Arafah.

This spiritual journey is unique to Aidiladha.

Both Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Haji begin with special Eid prayers held at the mosque, bringing the community together in celebration

Aidilfitri prayers take place on 1 Syawal, while Hari Raya Haji prayers happen slightly later in the Islamic calendar, on 10 Zulhijjah.

The prayer rituals are identical but the meaning behind the festivities differ. Aidilfitri marks the end of Ramadan and Aidiladha marks the end of the Hajj (pilgrimage) season, as well as the spirit of korban.

Whether it's Aidilfitri's joyful vibe or Aidiladha's sacred meaning, both are powerful reminders of faith, gratitude, and community — in very different ways
