Ladies, this is your month to shine, celebrate your strength, take charge of your health, and support one another. Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting Malaysian women, with about 1 in 19 women diagnosed in their lifetime, according to the Ministry of Health.

This Pink October, the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia (BCWA Malaysia) is supporting Unilever's nationwide campaign to raise awareness about breast health and encourage early detection. From learning how to do regular breast self examinations  to going for clinical breast exams, every small step can make a big difference in saving lives.

The truck will be popping up at Watsons Anggun City, Rawang, from 25 to 26 October, between 11am and 4pm. Here, ladies can enjoy a free clinical breast examination and receive breast health education, guided by experienced medical professionals every step of the way. Early detection can make a big difference, and these screenings are a simple yet important step for your health.

Here's the thing. Regular breast self examinations can help more than you realise. Take charge of your health now!

Many of us don't realise the importance of regular screenings until we hear it from those who've lived through it. That's why Unilever is giving the stage to survivors who will share their journeys and strength, inspiring women everywhere.

One of them is Kala Balasingam, who was first diagnosed in 2008 and again in 2021. For her, the toughest moment was hearing the word "cancer" for the first time.

"It felt like the ground disappeared beneath me. But the love and support from my doctors, daughter, family, and friends gave me the strength to believe in myself, even on the days when I didn't have much left to give," she said.

Today, Kala lives more intentionally, taking better care of her body and mind. She reminds women not to delay their health checks, urging them to do monthly self-exams, go for regular screenings, and schedule mammograms after 40, as early detection can save lives.

For Hiba Abdul Rahman, who was diagnosed in 2015 at stage 2, treatment meant a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, and targeted therapy. Ten years on, she is cancer-free, but says the journey never really ends.

"Cancer doesn't stop when treatment stops. It's always a part of me. While others were building careers or families, I was just trying to survive. That's why I speak up, so others know they're not alone," she shared.

Her advice is simple but powerful, understand your body, act quickly if something feels off, and always advocate for yourself because the earlier you act, the better your chances.

Kim Lim, diagnosed with stage 3A triple negative breast cancer in 2020, faced her toughest battle when she lost her only brother midway through chemotherapy, while also caring for her elderly mother and young nephew.

"It was overwhelming, but with the support of BCWA mentors, friends, and relatives, I found the strength to keep going," she recalled.

Today, Kim focuses on moderation and gratitude. She emphasises the importance of being self-aware, doing monthly self-examinations, and seeking medical advice immediately if any changes are detected — because early detection truly saves lives.

Stories like Kala's, Hiba's, and Kim's remind us that breast cancer can affect anyone, but they also show the power of resilience, support, and early action. That's why initiatives like Pink October are so important, they keep the conversation going and bring communities together.

And while you're looking after your health, don't forget to care for yourself in other ways too <3
