Have you been planning a road trip to Thailand with your friends?

Before you think about anything else, crossing the Malaysia-Thailand border by road comes down to having the proper documents ready and complete.
Here's exactly what you need to make your trip smoother:
1. Your passport

Your passport will be the primary document needed for immigration clearance at the border.
Malaysians can enter visa-free for up to 30 days, but you may still need to fill out an arrival card (TM6) or follow digital entry procedures depending on the checkpoint.
It's also important to note that your passport must be valid for at least six months before entering Thailand.
2. Your Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC)

If you're driving your own car, you must present the original Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC).
This document confirms that the vehicle is registered under your name. Photocopies are generally not accepted, as Thai Customs may require the original for verification.
If you're driving someone else's car, you'll need written permission from the owner. This should include a copy of the owner's IC or passport and a signed authorisation letter.

3. Thai third-party insurance

Malaysian car insurance does not cover driving in Thailand, so you must purchase Thai third-party insurance, which can be obtained near the border or online.
This insurance is compulsory for you to drive legally in Thailand.
4. TM2 and TM3 forms

These are standard entry forms issued at the border:
- TM2 form: Contains details of your vehicle
- TM3 form: Lists all passengers in the vehicle
You'll fill these in at the checkpoint, and they will be stamped by immigration officers, with copies usually retained for recording purposes.
5. Your vehicle entry document

When you enter Thailand, you'll be issued a vehicle entry document (similar to a Temporary Import Permit or digital record). This document is important, as it links your vehicle to your entry details.
You must keep the entry document to present and return it when exiting Thailand to avoid any penalties or fines.
